Being An 80s Kid

Last night I was laying in bed watching an episode of Boy Meets World. One thing in the show really struck me and got me thinking back to “the good ole days”. That item: a calculator watch.

I remember back in elementary school, all of the “cool kids” had a calculator watch. Looking back now, it sure seemed silly but at the time, it was a must-have item. I somehow convinced my mom to get me one of the $20 versions from Wal-Mart. Yeah, don’t be jealous!

My mind started racing after the calculator watch and I started writing down these ideas. Surely I am not the only one that remembers these items, right?

Who needed Matchbox cars when you had Micro Machines! I had a HUGE collection of these mini vehicles. I still remember my favorite being the Lamborghini Countach

One of the few items that I actually never got. We weren’t exactly rich when I was a kid, so when I asked my parent’s for some Pump Shoes… well they pretty much laughed. Spending $50+ for a pair of shoes was simply out of the question.

One thing that I could afford, however, was Parachute Men! These 25-cent toys were soo much fun to play with. Me and some friends would get on the highest hill around and see whose man could fly the farthest. Best investment ever!

Slap bracelets were another staple of my childhood. I would go to school with my arms and legs covered in these things. Wow, I must have looked pretty silly!

Alf - who could forget such a lovable cat-eating space alien?! I haven’t seen a episode of this show in years. With all of these old shows like Full House and Saved By The Bell still in syndication, I am a bit surprised some network hasn’t picked up Alf.

Trapper Keepers were wildly popular when I was in elementary school. So much so that many of the teachers wouldn’t allow students to use them because they were such a “distraction”. I had a few different ones during my early school years.

I could probably go on all night but I will stop here… for now! So did any of you have/use/remember any of these great things from the 80s?

  1. KellyCho Said,

When I was in school in Brazil, I used to ‘import’ the slap bracelets and sell them to my classmates.

  2. Shawn Knight Said,

HAHA a true entrepreneur in the making!

  3. Lulu Said,

OMG! Shawn WHY did you have to go there. I never got the pump shoes (too expensive) but I did have the parachute men (actually I stole them from my brother). I went through the trapper keeper phase too.
But I think my watch was better than yours…I had a Radio Watch. And all the kids in my school thought it was the Knight Rider watch and would grab my arm and try to call Kit (or Karr too!)
This post is priceless! I have starred it in my reader.
Where is your digg thingy coz I would digg this.

  4. Lulu Said,

Oh I just remembered this one. How about those Neon shoelaces. I had them in every color in my shoes and I would weave them to make bracelets too….and put them in my hair. I was Day-glo walking!!!

  5. Kattikawn Said,

I always wanted those color-changing t-shirts. I think they were called Hypercolor or something like that? They were heat sensitive, so you could place your hand flat against them and your handprint would show up in a different color. Everyone had one of those, and my mom would never buy me one. I’m sure she thought they were tacky.

Also, the L.A. Lights shoes were starting to get big back then. I never got a pair of those either.

BTW, I run across reruns of ALF occasionally. It’s on DVD now as well. My dad used to laugh his ass off at that show.

  6. Shawn Knight Said,

Oh yeah, the light-up shoes, I remember those! I actually got a pair of the generic knock-offs… I was so skinny that half the time I didn’t weigh enough to activate the lights hahaha

I dont really remember the shoe laces or the color changing shirts…

I might have to do a “round two” post if I keep thinking of all these old things…
