Do Something!

I’ll be the first to admit that I still have a lot to learn about taking initiative, getting motivated and actually “doing something”. But then again, I feel that I have learned so much about these topics over the past few years and I want to share some of my thoughts with you all here today. I will try to give an example of each opinion when applicable. BTW, I have a lot of just really random thoughts that I feel all play together somehow, so just remember you have been warned :)

“Wow that guy who won the lottery is sooo lucky!”. My dad strikes up a conversation on this topic at least once every other month. He continues on with what he would do with the money if it was him that had won. Sure, it would be great to win that kind of money, and sure, luck pays a big role in it. My dad isn’t the only one… I hear the same thing from many people. These same people all have the same thing in common: they have never played the lottery, and thus, will never even have a chance at winning anything.

The same goes for winning money at a casino. Although you should only go to a casino for entertainment purposes and never with the real hopes of winning money… some people do hit it big and walk away with a whole lot of money. Congrats to you, you earned it… you actually went out and did something. You weren’t that person sitting at home on the couch, wasting precious time wishing for opportunities like this to happen to you.

And here is yet another spin on this topic. I read an article that made the front page of Digg.com earlier today discussing AGLOCO and how it is a waste of time and nobody will ever make any money from it. The comment clan was soon to follow, backing up the article 100% (Digg users love to comment on anything negative and get their 2 cents in). Someone mentioned John Chow in a comment referring to how successful he has been at building his AGLOCO network up to 9,000+ referrals (as of writing). Someone else then commented on how him and the others in the top 10 will be the only ones to make money.

I completely disagree with this, but just for argument sake, let’s say this guy is correct. Let’s say that at the end of the day, John and the other nine people in the top 10 are the only ones to make money. Well, rightfully so. They aren’t “lucky” and their success stories aren’t anything magic. They worked to earn that top 10 status in AGLOCO while countless other people sat around and said “oh that will never work”. Don’t just sit around with an opportunity at hand and think “well there is already a group of successful people doing ______ and I will never be able to become one of them”. Yes you can, you can do almost anything if you are committed enough and want it bad enough.

Seven years ago when I started my first website to show off some modifications to my computer, I never imagined I would be running a tech site full time. But, as time progressed, I developed a vision of where I wanted OCIA.net to be in the future. Just a few years ago, I knew I wanted to run the site full time as my job. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to accomplish this. But I i sucked it up, stuck with it and worked my tail off. And here I am today, living my dream. I wasn’t “lucky” - I worked for it and got what I wanted.

Now, up until this point, it may sound like I am simply talking about ways to be successful at making money. No, I don’t want this to come across that way, because that is not exactly what I intend this post to be about. I never started my simple computer website with the intent to make money. Not all ventures in life have to be about making money. Sure, it can end up making you money, but there are only a few things that you should do with the intent to make money.

Moral of the story: you will never get anywhere unless you actually DO something. Take action, even if the odds are stacked against you. You will never have a claim to anything successful if you just sit around, watching everyone else have success and just waiting for something to fall into your lap. Because, odds are, it won’t happen.
