Don’t Forget To Renew Your Domain Name(s)

I was doing some website work yesterday when out of nowhere, I thought of a great idea for a new website name. I headed over to my domain registration site of choice, Dotster.com and logged into my account. When I logged in, I notice something highlighted in red: the expiration date for my tech site, OCIA.net!

The domain name was set to expire in just five days and I was not sent any kind of warning about it; that is pretty scary! Now, whether or not they would have sent me an email in the coming days is unknown, but I certainly didn’t feel too great about the lack of notice and promptly extended my registration for another year. I am terrible when it comes to remembering things like this, so if you are anything like me, be sure to keep a close eye on your domains and know when they are scheduled to expire. I can only imagine the nightmare I would have had to face if someone snatched the domain from me!

  1. Stephen Said,

That’s why I always register my domains for at least 5 - 10 years, and put auto renewal on the account. Small details have dire consequences sometimes.

A lot of places now are not sending renewal notices because they make money off people bidding on listings that are about to expire. Good thing you caught it because someone might have put in a bid when it did expire and you would have to pay a higher price to get it back.

  3. FunkZ Said,

I have mine set to auto-renew as well, but I use GoDaddy for a registrar. You will never forget when one of your domains is coming up for renewal with them… they start letting you know 2 months in advance and I think I got about 20 emails plus phonecalls when I let a domain expire on purpose.

  4. swollenpickles Said,

Same thing happened to me. After that I’ve always ticked auto renew.
