How Much Do You Spend On Food?

Unless you track your finances in detail, it’s probably more than you think!

I just spent a decent amount on groceries as I was out of virtually everything. Then I got curious and decided to check the past few months and see exactly how much I spent on food. The results are, well, I don’t know really…

I took the values from the past three months and categorized it into fast food/restaurant food and groceries. Fast food/restaurant food averaged out to $143.94 per month and I spent an average of $214.53 on groceries for a total food bill of $358.46 per month. The grocery tab is a bit misleading, as it includes household items like shampoo, soap, trash bags, etc.

So my question still stands, how much do you guys spend on food per month? :)

  1. Crys Said,

We usually spend $120/month on groceries, but sometimes my father will go out and spend $20 here and there out of his own pocket, which I don’t keep track of.

However, we also currently get Schwans specialty service, which is ridiculously expensive, and I just haven’t been able to convince myself to stop the service yet (since we’re friends with the delivery guy). It’s about $80/month.

I seem to spend more money when I try to buy meal by meal at the grocery store. However when i go to the store once a week and buy food for the whole week it comes out to be less. I think it is because once I have food in the house I will make something work. I would say that I typically spend about $150 or so on groceries a month if not more.

  3. Kattikawn Said,

Seeing as I have been poor these last six months, I’ve only been spending maybe $100 a month on groceries and other necessities like cat food/litter and hygiene items.

But the daily meals of salads and sandwiches appears to be paying off judging from all the comments I’ve been getting lately about how I look like I’ve lost weight! =D

  4. Ed Lau Said,

I’m not really sure to be honest. I never really kept track or anything. Maybe that’s something I should pay attention to this month.

  5. Nick Said,

Caesi and I really don’t keep track of everything with food money - but like she said, it’s probably around 15-200 dollars.

  6. derek Said,

This post is timed well with a post I just made on my personal finance site about the idea to stop eating your money (linked above).

In our case, we budget/spend $100 per month on eating out and $400-500 per month on groceries for a family of 4. As you mention, that also includes all of our personal care items and house cleaning type items.

For any of you not keeping track of spending, try to do it for a month to see how much you are really spending on food. You will likely be surprised. Include things like drinks/snacks from the vending machine at work and the coffee/muffin on the way to work. It can be a very eye-opening experience to see how much you really spend.

  7. Lulu Said,

I spent $83 last month but I am trying to get that down.

  8. KellyCho Said,

I don’t ever keep track of where my money goes but if I had to guess, I probably spend about $300 per month. Pretty terrible.

  9. Leo Said,

The best thing about working in the movie industry is that I get free catered meals on set. My grocery bills are negligible. I can honestly say that I spend more money on booze than I do on food ;)
