How To Remove Rust Stains From a Bath Tub

This is an issue I have been looking to remedy for a few months now. I have two sets of really bad rust stains in my bath tub that will need to be removed before I move if I plan to get back my deposit.

I have tried several different household cleaners to remove the stains, including Formula 409, Scrubbing Bubbles and even CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust) remover. All have failed miserably. So my next step was to hit the internet to see if I could find a “home remedy” that would work, which I will be detailing here today.

Yep, lemon and salt! Sounds easy enough, so I decided to give it a try.

I dried one of the spots the other night after I showered then covered the area in salt.

Then, pour lemon juice over the salty area. This was a bit tough, as the stain is sitting at an angle; half on the base of the tub, and the other half at the bottom of the wall.

I left the mixture to soak in overnight and checked back on it the next day.

Wow, it worked! Granted, it didn’t totally remove the stain, probably because I hadn’t covered the surface evenly, but it did a really nice job. Another application or two and it should be totally gone!

Now you know: don’t bother with cleaning products to remove rust stains - salt and lemon juice does the trick perfectly!

I’ll have to try that on my tub.

  2. Stephen Said,

I’m too impatient. CLR for me thanks. Does shower heads and radiators too. Available at all finer retailers

  3. Derek Said,

I’d have to ask my wife but I think she has used OxyClean before to remove spots like this on the tub. But the salt and lemon seems like a pretty easy solution.

Stephen - Yeah, CLR didn’t do anything for these stains… fail.

I’m glad to see that worked out after all. I’m really curious if the white vinegar trick I read about might work as well.
