How To Ruin A 4th of July Celebration

Leave it up to the city of Memphis to screw everything up… even a 4th of July celebration.

I was talking with Kiwi about plans for the 4th of July. You see, each year in Memphis there are two big 4th of July celebrations (fireworks shows): one at Tom Lee Park which is downtown (very crowded, no free parking, etc) and one at Shelby Farms (great view, peaceful, free to park, etc). Both events are held on July 3rd. Well, not this year…

Uhm… what the hell?! First, they are ditching the show at Shelby Farms and “combining” both shows downtown at Tom Lee Park. Gee, thanks. Oh, and who came up with the brilliant idea to move the celebration to a different month? While we are at it, I think it would be a great idea to move Thanksgiving to August. That way, we can have a really big picnic downtown in the summer!

  1. PISSED OF PARENT!! Said,

I agree my family has been going to Shelby Farms every year for the fireworks show and now they messed it up..Downtown is not a great environment for children nor is it in any way a great event. As you said Shelby Farms is more peaceful, relaxing, and most importantly safe for the kids. Now my family has to go downtown, pay 10.00 to 20.00 to park, fight the crowd, put up with the riff raff, and watch the worst fireworks display in the state…NOT VERY FUN!!! At least at Shelby Farms they had things to amuse the kids as well as the adults. Personally I feel very pissed off by this set up, and will be willing to sign a petition or whatever needs to be done to get our fireworks back at Shelby Farms!

Very well said! I would be game for signing a petition also. Lemme know if you come across one :)

  3. Natron Said,

We have the same issue. There is a show that is easy to get to and has parking, yet they never seem to find sponsors for the event and threaten to cancel at the last minute.
