iPhone 2.0 was just announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) as anticipated, and here is the skinny on what you want to know:
Software Side
- Support for Exchange out of the box - push email / contacts / calendars / auto discovery / global address book / remote wipe.
- Games look to be a big part of the new iPhone, using OpenGL.
- Support for Office documents.
- Bulk delete and move for email messages (finally!).
- Ability to save images you receive.
- Calculator with scientific mode
- Parental controls and better language support.
- 2.0 firmware available early July - free for iPhone owners, $9.99 for iPod Touch owners.
- App Store will have wireless download support, automatic updates. If the app is less than 10 MB, it can be downloaded through the cell network. Otherwise, through WiFi or iTunes.
- MobileMe: Exchange for the rest of us. Syncs email betwee, PC, iPhone, Mac - data gets synched both ways automatically.
The Actual Phone
- iPhone is indeed 3G
- Thinner
- Black plastic back
- Solid metal buttons.
- Same display (W00t!).
- Flush headphone jack
- Dramatically improved audio (thank goodness).
- Live demo comparing 3G against EDGE - 3G finishes in 21 seconds, EDGE in 59 seconds, 2.8x faster - approaching WiFi speeds.
- Better battery life - 300 hours of standby, 10 hours of talk time on 2G, 5 hours of talk time on 3G, 5-6 hours of high-speed internet browsing, 7 hours of video, 24 hours of audio.
- Native GPS support - gets data from cell towers, WiFi networks and GPS.
- iPhone 2.0 will be available in many countries, 70 total, to occur over the next few months.
- Price: 8 GB 3G iPhone will sell for $199, 16 GB version will sell for $299 (also available in white in this model).
- On sale July 11th.
