Quit Complaining About Gas Prices

I was over at How I Save Money earlier and ran across this post where LuLuGal is giving away a free gas card in exchange for writing a blog post of your own about how high gas prices have affected you. I figured this would be fun to write about, since my stance on gas prices are totally different than most.

First off, as you may or may not know, I am not able to drive. Does that mean my opinion here doesn’t matter? Quite the opposite really, as I feel my opinion matters even more due to this fact. Hear me out.

Yes, gas prices are at a record high level, that is not breaking news. $4.00+ a gallon does seem like a lot of money compared to what most Americans are used to paying. But really, think about it. Think about what you get for your $4.00… the ability to drive 20 miles or more without effort (pressing the gas pedal isn’t considered effort in my book) in the comforts of your air conditioned / heated vehicle. You don’t have to walk like many people in the world who are less fortunate than most Americans. You simply hop in your car and off you go.

You have the ability to quickly and efficiently get to and from anywhere you want to go, which is essentially unlimited freedom. Imagine being stuck at home day in and day out - the only transportation you have is what is within “walking” distance or when friends visit and offer to take you places. Imagine not being able to get a job because you have no transportation, or not being able to get to the grocery store because again, you have no way to get there. Think of it as being on house arrest without the legality of it.

Suddenly, $4.00 doesn’t seem like that bad of a price to pay for freedom. Welcome to my world, where I would gladly pay $4.00 or more for the opportunity to do any of the above listed things.

Now consider the fact that gas prices are what, $1.50 at most more than they were a few years ago. Does an increase of $1.50 really wreck your budget?! On average, gas is 5.1% of your budget and gas only went up 1% since last year, which averages out to about $40.00 more per month. $40.00 more a month and people are flipping out… yeah, that makes a lot of sense. If you think gas is expensive, check out these other price-per-gallon liquids:

A gallon of Starbucks coffee - $53.00

A gallon of bottled water - $16.00

A gallon of Tabasco sauce - $95.00

A gallon of printer ink - $7,500 - $8,000!

When is the last time you heard someone complain about Starbucks? Most Americans can’t drink that liquid gold fast enough!

The last point I want to talk about is all these silly free or discounted gas promotions. I saw on the news just a few minutes ago that some gas station offered $.99 gas for the day, and before the store even opened, the line was miles long and people were waiting for hours on end. Are you serious? How about, instead of sitting in your car wasting precious time, you go to work and earn some money. Then you can afford gas at any price! Geez…

You can’t turn on the TV these days without being flooded with car commercials offering free or discounted gas if you buy a new vehicle. Things like this drive me absolutely mad! First, you don’t get free unlimited gas for a year or whatever. You receive a gas card with restrictions, based on how many miles the average person drives at a set rate. Usually this is something like 12,000 miles a year. Most people I know drive a lot more than that, so while you will save some money, you won’t get free gas. Also… if you are really hurting for gas THAT bad, why on earth are you buying a brand new vehicle in the first place? That’s just pure stupidity.

The next time you complain about gas prices, I encourage you to give it some thought and think about some of the things discussed here today. And before you say it, yes I do pay money for gas. I am more than willing to give my friends gas money when they help me out around town, etc. because A) I do appreciate their help and B) I appreciate the modern automobile and the luxuries and conveniences that come with its operating costs.

  1. lulugal11 Said,

Wow, very interesting read Shawn. I am not sure if I am getting slapped in the face for my post (re: “silly gas promotions” when I am giving away a gas card) but hey it is still good to see an opposing side of view.

I am not complaining about gas prices here. Gas is $12.50 a gallon in the Caribbean so yeah Americans do have it better than most.

  2. Shawn Knight Said,

Nah, no slap in the face, you aren’t trying to sell me a new car ;) hehe

  3. Kattikawn Said,

You of all people should realize that every penny counts these days.
Let me give an example. When I first started driving in early 2001, I could fill up my gas tank for about $10. If I filled up once a week, I was spending around $40 - $50 per month to get to school and work. Now? That same weekly fill up would cost me from $160 - $180. That’s a huge difference. Has the average income increased by a comparable amount? Not at all. Combine the rising cost of other energy sources and food and it’s no wonder people are losing their homes left and right.

Those many people in the world who walk to get where they’re going usually also have the advantage of living within that distance to their job, their schools, their stores, etc. They don’t *need* a car to get to those places, so why own one? Unfortunately for us, we live in a country that has been so manipulated and strung along by the automotive industry that it’s almost impossible to live within walking/biking distance of any job thanks to zoning laws that now prevent residential and commercial areas from intermingling. Very handy for the auto industry.

You see the use of a car as some sort of freedom. I see it as a chain that only allows you to get where you need to be based on how far your wallet can stretch.

  4. Stephen Said,

I just filled my whole tank for $5.14 which should last me 200 KM’s. I ain’t got nothing to complain about now…except for the price of Starbucks coffee :D

  5. Ed Lau Said,

I totally agree about the Starbucks, LOL. I also realized that bottled water is such a sham…especially if you live where I do and have probably the cleanest water supply in the world.

Why can’t you drive? Did you pull the same stunt that I did? I’ve got a total of probably a year of driving bans.

  6. Shawn Knight Said,

Driving bans? What did you do, not pay tickets? heh…

I have a genetic muscle disorder, basically it slowly kills off your muscles over time… fun stuff!

  7. Frank Black Said,

Buddy, i found myself annoyed with your blog post here and i’m not sure why… You mention from at the beginning that you don’t drive and yet this should make your opinion count more. why? If you don’t drive, just why should your opinion matter at all? i respect your right to have an opinion, but i also have the right to disregard your opinion altogether, especially if it’s unoriginal or just inferior.

Yes, i have seen those stats for the price of other liquids in the same measurements with which we measure gas. BUT those prices are pretty static and unchanging. we’re used to paying $40+ for ink toner, $5 for $tarbux. If suddenly a cafe latte cost $10, not only would people be bitching about it, but demand were likely drop. What used to take $20 to fill, now takes $50 or $60, and many American’s don’t like it. As for you, my fellow internet citizen, you can’t drive, so let me put it in terms you can understand:

imagine if suddenly the cost of maintaining a motorized wheelchair for vegetables like yourself suddenly doubled or tripled. or perhaps it’s one too many DUIs that has snatched your license, so imagine the price of those engaging alcohol programs the state makes you take start going through the roof. If you can’t drive, i suspect you’re not making much progress with the dames, so imagine that your access to high quality pornography went from $20 a month now to $60 a month. you can barely afford both your porn and adult diapers. wouldn’t you be annoyed, maybe even complain?

I’m sorry that you’re on nature’s house arrest, but the rest of us have been driving for years and we’re a little upset that the price of gas has gone through the roof and that we have little alternatives.

  8. me Said,

    Dear Frank Black

    hey twatwaffle….

    EAT A CO***

  9. Shawn Knight Said,

LOL nice comment there Frank, you get the award for internet dick of the day!

Seriously, its people like you that take shit for granted. Correct, I don’t drive… and if anything, thats proof that vehicles aren’t absolutely necessary for life.

Gas prices didn’t shoot up over night like you imply. This has been a trend the past several years. Every summer, they go up more and more. Why are you surprised that the trend is continuing?

The cost of motorized wheelchairs is already expensive. 11k for a basic chair is a bit silly, but unlike a car, is a necessary evil. Vegetable, not hardly. No DUI, sorry. If that were the case, I could still drive, just not legally. Progress with the ‘dames’? I’ve been married, so no merits there. As for the rest of the post, thats just retarded so I won’t even go there.

Like you said, to each his own opinion. My opinion - don’t do stupid shit like buy a new car, buy a new house, got out to eat every night and to the movies every weekend, dig yourself in debt then cry that you can’t afford to fuel your car. Easy as that.

  10. me Said,

and you’re still a huge twatwaffle. dont’ think you’re being “edgy” like carlos mencia cuz he’s not funny either.

  11. Gina Said,

Yes, you make some valid points about the cost of other things per gallon. But when am I going to buy a gallon of tabasco sauce? Never. When am I going to fill up my gas tank? Within the next few days. And I know not everyone needs to drive. I lived in a city last year and I didn’t have a car and I rarely took the bus or a taxi. But I live in a rural area, along with a lot of other americans. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to the nearest gas station and that one is outrageously priced. This is a HUGE problem for many people in my area, because they are barely making enough money to drive themselves to the work. That is where the problem is with the rising gas prices.

  12. Thomas De Maesschalck Said,

Unfortunately it’s not just about gas. The whole economy is fueled by oil, just about any product directly or indirectly uses oil and at this point there’s no good substitute.

As oil climbs to new record heights nearly every week the cost of all products you consume goes up as well. Last month the inflation in my country was 5.8% - that’s the highest inflation in 24 years.

  13. Shawn Knight Said,

Thanks for your reply Gina. You mentioned that many people in your area barely make enough to drive themselves to work. Do they have a minimum wage-paying job? I just can’t see someone with a halfway decent job being so broke they can’t afford to even drive to work… maybe I am missing some variables in this?

  14. Frank Black Said,

OK. vehicles aren’t necessary for life. you finally make a statement i can agree with. but for some (not myself) they are nearly necessary for life. i suspect many of your readers(or friends i should say) and i fall into the vast middle class, where it hurts a little to pay $5 a gallon for gas. but there is a lower class getting paid lower wages and for them, driving to work is a necessary evil. Not everyone can work in a 10 mile radius from their home. for that aforementioned lower class, there’s no new car, new house, dining out, nor movies. But there is a huge new hole in their finances due to a continually inflating gas price. So despite your generalization that all americans are complaining vapid twats (and i’m not saying i’m not one), there are many americans who have valid complaints and really that’s what’s at the heart of my post.

Your blog was half baked and didn’t really make many arguments, just vast generalizations and state some stats that i’ve read 5 times before on other sites. So it irratated me and i thought i’d present a dissenting voice. and i threw a little “below the belt” humor. you seem to be able to take it, even if you didn’t appreciate it.

Now please continue complaining about the complainers. when your traffic jumps today, you can blame that on actually having a post from someone who dissents and not just goes along with whatever you say; bunch of kool-aid drinking friends.

and ME: unlike Carlos Menica, i write my own material, even if it is nothing more than a low brow flame war. if you have anything else to say, pull your head out of that vast dark hole called your ass, i can’t hear anything with your lips pressed up against your butt cheeks like that…

  15. Kattikawn Said,

FYI, you can make a lot more than minimum wage and be unable to cover the cost of gas. Minimum wage doesn’t even provide enough to cover rent in *any* county in the nation, much less the cost of getting to work on top of it. (I’d link you the study I got that statistic from if I could remember where it came from.)

So yes, it takes *much* more than minimum wage to even live in more than a cardboard box in this country.

  16. Krusty Said,

I’m not sure if anyone should really listen to someone who doesn’t drive about gas prices but a least if you are going to post stats they should be at least close….. I’m not sure where you live but if you go to sam’s club you can get a gallon of Franks Red Hot (which I think has a better taste than tabasco) you would pay less than $9 for a gallon not $95 and water is also sold by the gallon just about everywhere $2 a gallon or less. Here in Los Angeles we even have water vending machines where you bring your own container and can get water for $.25 a gallon not $16 a gallon and printer ink is about $2 an oz w/ 128oz in a gallon that would be less than $260 not $7,500-$8,000 one thing not thought of is why does gas not get cheaper per gallon when bought in bulk as most things do…

  17. Frank Black Said,

uh-oh, we got a full on revolt brewing here.

  18. Shawn Knight Said,

Krusty - the stats I used were taken from the Dave Ramsey show. Stuff like bottled water - I am specifically talking about individual bottles, not bulk size gallon containers. If that were the case, just go drink it from the tap for free. People pay for the convenience and packaging, so you won’t see people carrying around gallon sized jugs.

$2 an oz for printer ink? Where do you buy ink? I’ve never seen it that cheap… when I buy a $30 printer cartridge, according to your math, I would have 15 oz of ink? Not even close.

I do agree that its funny that gas doesn’t sell for cheaper in bulk he

  19. Gina Said,

Well Shawn Knight unfortunately, in my area, there are a lot of people who try to live off of minimum wage. I live in what used to be tobacco country, which means that a lot of people are losing their farms and jobs. So many have to take pretty shitty jobs to make it. I just wish there was more support for alternative fuels.

  20. Matt Said,

I only have one little disagreement, I can buy a gallon of bottled water for 60 cents, as for the other things too, prices go down when hey are bought in bulk so they are not very accurate either. I’m not saying it isn’t ridiculous, just pointing it out.:)

  21. Derek Said,

Awesome job coming up w/ useless stats!!

the per gallon numbers are completely useless. Why not throw in the per gallon price of gold just for some good shock value! (i mean gallon is just a measurement of volume)

if you really wanted some meaningful number, try to get some meaningful units. compare the cost of driving to work everyday with the cost of buying a coffee everyday. for me, about 10 miles to work, 20 to get there and back, i get about 28 mpg, so i use .71 gallons of gas, just for commuting. @ 4 dollars a gallon, that costs me 2.85 to go to work everyday. i dont drink coffee, but it costs what, like 2 dollars for a starbucks coffee? maybe 3? most drink like 1 a day… so in an average person spends about the same on coffee as they do on gas. Do they get the same joy out of it? i dunno, thats your call. Guess it depends on how much they like walking and how much they need the coffee.

Now for me, i fucking hate writing things by hand. so i go through maybe 2 cartridges a month of ink. ink costs me like $30 per cartridge, that’s like 50 cents per day! i think i’d rather just pay for ink instead of driving to work, given the choice.

now the real thing you have to notice here is not that i’d rather walk 20 miles than write 4 pages by hand, its that you can modify the numbers to look awesome. so good job on the meaningless post. I think i’ll go enjoy spending an extra $100 a month for gas with the new prices cause unlike you, a car is necessary for me.

  22. Derek Said,

sorry just noticed this, it should read “so i go through 1 cartridge of ink every 2 months” not “so i go through maybe 2 cartridges a month of ink”

  23. Justin Said,

…However, I don’t routinely buy 25 gallons of starbucks coffee per week, and it’s NOT required for me to get to MY JOB, unlike the 25 gallons of gasoline per week that ARE required to get to my job and earn a paycheck. Same goes for ink, water, tabasco, etc. How many of us are required to drink 25 gallons of tabasco sauce weekly in order to stay employed or visit family? …very few. :)

  24. lulugal11 Said,

So are any of you going to enter the drawing for the gas card? :-)
    The link is here http://www.howisavemoney.net/save-money/win-gas-card-save-money.

  25. Jeff Said,

While I agree with you post..not to nitpick or anything but your price for a gallon of Tabasco sauce is way off the mark :)

    http://www.google.com/products?q=tabasco+gallon&btnG=Search+Products

I assume you were pricing as if you were buying a bunch of the small containers..

  26. paulette Said,

Dont use your car to stop complaining about the high price of gas.An extra walk can make you stay fit and healthy
