Running Dual Monitors

We recently had a few forum threads concerning new monitor purchases and dual monitors. I have been running dual monitors for over a year now. After getting rid of my ancient CRT monitor, I picked up a 17″ Acer LCD screen and instantly fell in love with my newfound desk space. Several months later I got the idea to add the 17″ KDS LCD monitor from my spare system to the main rig. The nVidia control panel was able to manage both monitors but was really lacking as far as options go. Luckily someone filled me in about UltraMon, a wonderful multi-monitor software program which made life with dual monitors much more rewarding.

LCD monitor prices have been on a steady decline for a while and I decided to treat myself to an early Christmas gift. Newegg was running a great deal on Chimei 22″ LCD monitors so I decided to pick up a pair. I was a bit unsure about the purchase considering I had never heard of Chimei before, but the user reviews were all positive and the price was too sweet to pass up. I was almost afraid to power up the monitors… my track record with LCDs hasn’t been great. Both of the 17″ monitors I had before had a single dead pixel; one red, one blue. Anyway, the moment of truth.. and wow, not a single dead pixel!

So what is life like running dual monitors… and for that matter, dual 22″ screens? Absolutely amazing. The ability to have so many programs and windows open and visible at once is a priceless asset. The amount of time I save writing reviews, editing, resizing photos, etc… Honestly switching to a dual monitor setup is probably the single most advantageous computer “upgrade” I have ever done. Yes, it makes that much of a difference! Anyway, I took a screen shot of my desktop earlier which should give you an idea of just how much “room” there really is…

Each monitor runs at a native resolution of 1680 x 1050, making for a total of 3360 pixels wide!
