From IMDB - Evan Treborn grows up in a small town with his single working mom and his friends. He suffers from memory blackouts where he suddenly finds himself somewhere else, confused. Evans’ friends and mom hardly believe him, thinking he makes it up just to get out of trouble, something bad always seems to happen during these blackouts. As Evan grows up he has less of these blackouts until he seems to have recovered. Since the age of seven he has written a diary of his blackout moments so he can remember what happens. One day at college he starts to read one of his old diaries, and suddenly a flashback hits him like a brick!
This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. I am usually not a fan of “complicated” films but when I first watched this movie a few years ago, I was instantly drawn into it, so much so that I bought the DVD. I have watched this movie probably 10 times or more and each time I watch it, I “see” something that I did not catch before and that is what makes this movie so great.
So I was bored a few nights ago so I decided to watch the movie with the director’s audio commentary. Again, completely blown away! I thought I knew this movie in and out but there are so many subtle things that I never caught and probably never would have without the commentary.
The directors played around a lot with color in the film. In the beginning of the movie, the colors are “normal” but when Evan goes back in time and alters the future, each alternate reality is a bit more washed out than the previous (with the exception of the college reality, where colors are extremely vibrant). Also, every time something bad is about to happen, the directors slipped in a hint of “Miller Red” into the scene… very subtle but if you are looking for it, very powerful.
I could write about this movie for days, but that wouldn’t get us anywhere. If you haven’t already seen this movie, ignore the bad type about Kutcher’s performance (because it wasn’t bad at all), do yourself a favor and check out this film. And if you’ve already seen it, check it out again, I’m sure you’ll discover something new!
