Why Dress Your Kid In Designer Clothes?

I was at the Student Union earlier mailing out a package and I saw something that totally blew my mind. I’ve seen it time and time again, and for the life of me, I can’t figure it out. So, what did I see? A girl, college-aged, with what I would assume was her son, maybe 2-3 years in age. Nothing new here… but the kid was wearing a North Face jacket. The North Face is a trendy, sportswear designer that many college kids here wear (you aren’t cool unless you have The North Face logo on your jacket, period).

I could care less what type of clothes people wear (people who are old enough to pay for these items themselves), but why in the world would you buy a kid designer clothes!?

I did some research when I got back home. I wanted to see how much infant and toddler clothes and accessories cost. What I found, is well, flabbergasting.

New Balance shoes are hot and have been for a few years now. A quick look at their website and I found these shoes for infants, priced at $37.99. According to the shoe size chart on their site, a pair of infant-sized shoes would fit your baby for 2-3 months at best.

You can’t have your kid going around shirtless, so why not pick up a Ralph Lauren Polo? Price: $52.50. This will only last a few months as well… as your kid will either A) outgrow it or B) ruin it by spilling who-knows-what on it. Great buy here.

We round out the outfit with some Baby Gap jeans, priced at a cool $39.50. Your kid will be the talk of the town at daycare with these jeans… well, that is, if infants could talk! Get real people.

I could never imagine spending $130.00+ on a single outfit for a kid, no matter how much I loved them. That would easily be one of the biggest wastes of money ever. What I have noticed is this: mostly younger parents are guilty of this behavior. Why, just why would you do this? So your 9-month-old can look “fresh”? Having a kid as a teenager is enough to tell most people how “fresh” you really are. Take that money and deposit it into a college fund or savings account for yourself or the kid.

Do any of you dress your kids in designer clothes? Or, if you had kids, would you?

  1. Derek Said,

Absolutely not! I don’t even dress myself in designer clothes as I just don’t understand the appeal. Personally, I look at most of what is considered fashionable and I think it is hideous. This makes it easy to avoid paying for anything.

The furthest I have gone for myself was “splurging” on a pair of Chuck Taylors, lol. Most of our clothes shopping for the kids is done at places like Kohls, Target, JCPenny, etc. As you mentioned, they grow out of it or destroy it so fast that they don’t even have time to worry about it. This might change as they get older but they have never complained about it so far.

  2. slugbug Said,

I buy myself $10.00 jeans and $5.00 shirts. I couldn’t care less about designer labels. As long as the clothes fit well and are comfortable, that’s all I care about.

  3. BigMan Said,

Yeah, kids clothes cost a fortune. I hate shopping for my son who is 2 and a half, his clothes cost almost as much as mine. Quite pointless to shop name brand though.
