Why People Screw Up With Money

It never ceases to amaze me how things look “on the other side of the tracks”. Before I started following financial expert Dave Ramsey, I was just like every person I am about to rant on. I was “normal” - I did things with money that most everyone does… stuff that is socially acceptable and never gave it a second thought. When someone in the “know” would mention how money should be handled, I laughed and thought they were crazy. I had the mindset of a child - I did what felt good. If I wanted something, I bought it, even if it required me going into debt to do so. I have no shame and will admit, they were right - I was wrong.

The more money I make, the more money I can spend

null

I have a few really big qualms that I want to discuss here today. The first is, everyone seems to think, “the more money I make, the more money I can spend”. Someone gets a new job or a promotion, and the first thought that pops into their mind is, “what can I go out and buy now!?”. While that is bad enough, I have even witnessed people who haven’t even got that new job and are already planning how to spend that money, whether it be a new car, moving, shopping, etc. That is just sickening! Just because you make more money doesn’t mean you have to find a way to spend more.

And if they don’t have the money to buy something with cash, they rationalize their decision and “figure out” a way to justify borrowing money to make it happen. The reasons you will hear vary widely and are quite humorous: I don’t want to drive a crappy used car, I want to buy a hybrid to save money on gas, I work hard and I deserve a new ________, etc. Oh, shut up! You aren’t special, nobody is “too good” to drive a used car. Spending 25-30 grand on a new hybrid just to save $10 a week in gas doesn’t make sense financially. You would have to drive that car to the moon and back to get a return on your money. And, other people work just as hard as you, princess, you aren’t so special that you “deserve” something new all the time.

Budgeting

null

The second thing I want to touch on is knowing where your money is going each month. When you say the word “budget”, again, many people think that is below them and is only something that stupid people do. So wrong! A budget is MANDATORY if you ever want to be successful with money. You need to know where your money is going each month in order to make it work for you. I used to wonder where all of my money went, and then I started keeping track of where every dollar went each month. I found that I spent way too much money on food and was able to cut my spending on food by 50%. A budget is a rude slap in the face financially and will reveal exactly where all of your money goes each month.

Once a budget is in place, you then need to cut your lifestyle and your spending drastically. If every dollar comes in, and every dollar goes out, you will never be able to save money and pay cash for nice things you want. You will always be living paycheck to paycheck, on the brink of disaster. If you lose your job, that can push you over the edge into financial turmoil. That doesn’t sound like a fun place to me.

Cutting your lifestyle isn’t easy, but it also doesn’t mean you have to stay at home every day and be a total hobbit. You can take it to the extreme and do that and save a TON of money… or you can do a milder version of it. Cut back on how much you go out to eat or how often you go see that new movie or buy a new video game. It may not sound like much in conversation, but those savings add up really quick and you will see that reflected in your budget.

Frustration

The final thing I want to talk about is frustration… frustration after making the “jump” and being in the know. I consider myself a good person and a good friend, and it honestly hurts me to watch some of my friends be so foolish with money. What really gets to me is, when engaging in money talks with some of these people, it really shows how ignorant they are about money. They are just like I was at one time, which I can’t blame them for… but it really is an eye-opener to see every person recite the same BS reasons and thoughts about money. This is all stuff that they have been taught by society… and society is wrong! Like many other aspects in life, people won’t change unless they want to. I have to accept that, as much as I want to help people and give them advice, they just won’t listen until they are ready. Until then, I can only do what is best for me and will make me successful.

Let’s hear your thoughts on these topics! Do you live paycheck to paycheck? Do you save a percentage of your income each month? Do you do budget?

Yes I budget and I love it!!!!! I might be a little bit obsessed with my budget now but i don’t care what people think. I handled my money terribly before I started budgeting (and reading blogs!!!) and I was a financial mess.

Now that I have a budget I am making great progress towards paying off all my debts (some credit cards have been completely paid off..yippeeeeeeee).

You have not shown us your recent spending Shawn. I know you used to compare yourself to my numbers….so what are you spending on gas and food now?

  2. Shawn Knight Said,

Gas = $0, about the only benefit of not driving lol.

Food = Around $225 average per month, down from $400+ each month before the budget.

My main cutbacks have been on buying “toys”, computer stuff, etc.

  3. Keith Said,

Dave Ramsey is a great guy with great ideas. The only problem with him is the followers. You think Jesus freaks are bad?

I don’t mean to be a jerk about it, but some of the statements you made are kind of silly. I know people spend more than they make and they make stupid excuses to spend it. I do it all the time :)

I notice you said it was SICKENING that someone would spend more money when they get a promotion. SICKENING is someone raping a little kid. Spending too much money is just silly.

I guess my point is that Dave Ramsey almost has his own money religion and sometimes they are fanatics.

  4. Shawn Knight Said,

LOL. Yes I agree, someone could see it as a cult or something like that. But, if you really want to get serious about something and actually make it work… well, you have to be hardcore about it. It’s the only way to stay motivated and keep your goals in sight. If I or other people were not “fanatical” about it, what would keep you on track? It’s all about self-discipline, changing the way you think, etc.

If I were a pro athlete, for example… my entire life would revolve around that. I would eat specific foods, exercise non-stop, learn everything I could about my sport… all to make myself better at it. Would you call a football / baseball / basketball player a fanatic?

I still agree its silly when someone gets a promotion to instantly go out and jack up their quality of life. You are doing nothing more than setting yourself up for disaster. What happens when you lose that job and have a boatload of bills due each month? Its highly likely that the next job you find will start you out “at the bottom” - meaning you wont make as much as you did before. Then you have the fun task of figuring out how to keep making payments on stuff you can no longer “afford”.

Take a poor person and a rich person for example. They both spend everything they earn. At the end of the day, they are both headed for the poor house. Sure, the rich guy will look good doing it… but they will still end up at the same place.

  5. keith Said,

I would only call an athlete a fanatic if he looked at you and thought it was SICKENING that you didn’t exercise or eat properly. To them you would be SHORTENING YOUR LIFE!!!

see what i mean? I’m all for self motivation and definitely be hardcore about your goals. GO FOR IT! But if your motivation is to bash everyone who doesn’t take part, then no, that’s not right.

If I’m talking to you and you want to tell me all about what your doing and saving money, that’s awesome. I bet the pro athlete talks all the time about proper eating and what kind of exercises he’s doing. It’s only when they start pushing it on others that it becomes a problem.

  6. Shawn Knight Said,

I went back up and reread what I typed about sickening, and it was the part about planning before you have the job… and I agree still… if you are already making serious plans to buy a new car, do this, do that… before you even have said new job… come back to reality! Its like planning to buy a Ferrari if you win the lotto… but being dead serious about you winning.

Not bashing anyone. Maybe I’m too nice? It just will suck 30-40 years down the road, to see people that I am friends with, who will have lived paycheck to paycheck, still be doing that. Then when they can’t work anymore due to their age and have no retirement money… then what? Meanwhile… Mr McDuck will be swimming in a money pit hah.

But its not even that extreme. You don’t have to go your entire life being frugal, only to enjoy things when you are old and wrinkly. I just would rather be completely out of debt and have some sort of savings built before I spent bookoos of money on toys, etc.

I do agree, pushy people are annoying, I have experienced that with religious people in the past. Sure, I’ve mentioned the Dave stuff to just about everyone I know. But, I don’t run it down their throat, or I don’t try to (in person). If someone asks me my opinion, I will tell them. If casually chatting about money, etc. I will chime in with my thoughts.

Of course, the blog here is totally different. I have written about it a lot recently because A) I can, B) I’m not forcing anyone to read it, C) it adds quality content to the blog, D) entices others to comment, E) some people might learn from it.

    :)

  7. keith Said,

I can’t argue one bit with that last paragraph. I 100% agree!

And I never said I didn’t agree with what you said. I just meant the way it was said was kinda like fanatical. I do think that people are ignorant with money. I just think it’s sad, I don’t really get pissed off about it like some of your writing suggests.

  8. Shawn Knight Said,

haha you should comment here more often, that was fun!

What people do with their money is their own business, it’s not going to change my relationship with them, etc. I don’t get pissed when i look at rich ppl with no future, just kinda irritated. Kinda like the whole “he had so much going for him, then got into drugs” or similar situation. Way to ruin a great thing, champ!

    Good stuff sir ;)

  9. paulette Said,

Spending is just a habit. You can train yourself not to get used to it. Expenditure tracking can be very good to those with big expenses. What im doing not to spend much. I always see to it that i have money just enough for a ride and a snack. I avoid carrying money which i don’t need. Also if you have credit cards, be sure you know how to control yourself from swiping it:)

  10. Derek Said,

Shawn, absolutely loved this post and am very happy to hear that you have come to these realizations about your money habits. It is always interesting to hear how other people manage their money, as I’ve had some interesting conversations with a few people at work. When we received a recent bonus, I was asked if we already had plans on how to spend it - my response was yes, it is going directly into savings.

I really do my best not to preach to people about money or mistakes that I believe they are making. If someone asks me about something or the conversation lends itself, I will share my opinions and advice. But you nailed it on the head when you said the person needs to change their habits, otherwise your advice will not be well received.

Keep up the good work Shawn!
